Pingyao, a unique town in China
Pingyao is a town with many houses dating from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries and a magnificent city wall from the Ming Dynasty. It is the only original city wall in China. The city walls are 12 meter high and have a length of 6 kilometer. The city wall has 72 watchtowers. Pingyao, was declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
The city still breathes the atmosphere of imperial China. It is fun strolling through the many old streets. You can also ride a rickshaw. The first bank in China is also to be found in Pingyao and can be visited. There are several temples and other interesting houses to be visited where the interior has been restored to its former original state. Many restaurants are in authentic style, decorated like in the old days and serve the delicious local cuisine.
