The mysterious Plain of Jars in Laos
The mysterious Plain of Jars is situated in the heart of the province of Xieng Khuang in Laos and refers to the entire area where the jars can be found. There are 160 places (sites) where they are found. The huge stone jars are carved from one piece. In total, about 4,000 jars of various shapes and sizes and located in different positions. The three largest sites of this stone jars area are the designated places to be visited by tourists. These sites are free of all possible UXO's (not-exploded bombs). You can make a very nice walk of a few hours from site 2 to site 3.
The purpose of these jars is still not clearly understood. Some researchers say the jars would have served to store rice, according to other people they were used to "bury" human remains, other historians see the jars as a repository for wine. The Plain of Jars mystery has still not been fully disclosed and it remains an impressive and interesting visit.
