The Can Cau Hill tribe market in Vietnam
The weekly hill tribe markets in Vietnam are a real happening. It is the time to be seen and to attract the attention of the opposite sex. It is also a time to meet your old friends. While chatting with your friends you do some shopping too. Buy some new traditional clothes or practical things for at home.
The Can Cau market near the Chinese border every Saturday is one of these places. The market has been moved several times. The last move was from the rice fields to a new, by the government appointed place. The market is divided into three parts. One part has the animal section, like the horses, pigs, chickens, water buffalo’s and dogs. The other section has the singing birds. This section is usually a lit bit further away. Otherwise it is very difficult to hear the “singing voice” of the birds. This is one of the favorite past times of the Hmong and a way to make some extra cash. The last section has the traditional items like herbs, clothes and the wine made of fruit, rice or corn and the 21st century modern items which can be useful for the hill tribe people too. Near this market is also an interesting village of the Flower Hmong where you can see a mix between the traditional way of living and the modern times.
