Bangkok, City of Angels
The "real" name of the city is very different from the shorter and more generally known and used name in the west. The local people call the city Krung Thep, which loosely translated means the "City of Angels". To the outsider complicate matters, Krung Thep is only the abbreviation for the ceremonial name of this city, which is also the longest city name in the world.
The full name is as follows: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit.
That means roughly translated into a long list of adjectives: The city of angels, the magnificent city, home of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable Ayutthaya occupy on-the God Indra, the impressive capital of the world in the possession of the nine precious gems, the happy city, bathed in a huge palace similar to the heavenly home of the reincarnated gods, a city given by Indra and built by the god Vishnu.
This name indicates how important the city was Bangkok in the past, is still the case.
